Tutorial: Making a Basic Picture Frame
Materials:
You will need to download the materials. In the download folder you will get a picture of the ocean and then a wood grain pattern. You can use this photo or use one of your own! Click here to download materials
Ok let’s get started! First let’s go ahead and open up our ocean photo that you downloaded this is the picture we would like to add a basic frame too. With your picture open please go to your menu and click on SELECTIONS to SELECT ALL and then back to SELECTIONS to LOAD/SAVE SELECTION to SAVE SELECTION TO ALPHA CHANNEL. And put in settings shown below:
In the white box your text probably says Selections #1 please change that text to Picture Frame and click SAVE. Now as with most pictures they usually contain a matte that goes around the photo so we are going to add a textured matte to our photo also. So please go to your menu and click on IMAGE and then ADD BORDER as shown below
Now we will get a pop up box, this box is asking us how big we want our border to be that surronds our image and we would like a nice big border so in the boxes please change the number to 25. Now you will also notice there is a color box and yours probably is black, please click on the color box and choose a color that is NOT in your picture for me I chose a bright yellow to work with as shown below.
Once you have that done please click on the OK button and you should see a bright yellow border all around your image as shown below:
Ok now you will notice in my example above I have those marching ants all around my yellow border. To get those yellow ants please go to your toolbar and click on your MAGIC WAND once you have that selected just click on the INSIDE of the yellow border and you too should now see the marching ants surronding your yellow border. Now we want to choose a nice coordinating color for our matte so what I did was using our eyedropper tool I simply placed it on a spot in our picture and chose a nice light blue from the picture itself. If you are not sure how to use the eyedropper tool to do this please click here to follow our eyedropper tutorial. Now that I have my blue picked out we want to use our Flood Fill tool and FILL that yellow area with our light blue.
Ok now we are nice light blue area but it needs a little texture just like a real matte in a framed picture. So to do this we need to go to our menu area and click on EFFECTS to TEXTURE EFFECTS to TEXTURE and this will bring up the following box:

Ok on the left hand side you will see where it says Texture and in my example it says Canvas simple yours will say something else. Just click on that box and choose a texture of your choice you can mess around with this to find the perfect texture you want. Now my settings I used were Smoothnesss 4, Depth 3, Ambience 0, Shinness 0, Angle 315, Intensity 50, Elevation 30 and the texture I used was canvas simple now click on OK.
NOW if you added your text and you DO NOT like the look that is easy to UNDO just go to your menu and click on EDIT and then UNDO TEXTURE this will automatically remove the last thing you just did was adding your texture. And from there you can go back in and repeat adding a new texture you like better. Ok now that you have your texture added it is time to aded some shading to this to make this look like a real picture frame. To do this please go to your menu and Layers and we want to add a new layer this will our dark highlight so go to LAYERS and then NEW RASTER LAYER and in the NAME Field you can put Dark Highlight and then click on OK. Now go back to your menu and click on Selections and then LOAD/SAVE SELECTION and then LOAD SELECTION FROM ALPHA CHANNEL as shown below
Now you should get a pop up box as shown below and in the right hand box you should see picture that is the alpha channel we saved earlier. So using the settings Operation is Replace selection, and Nothing checked under options click LOAD
Now we are ready to add our dark highlight. So in your menu go to EFFECTS to 3d EFFECT to CUTOUT. And on this box we want our color to be black, and our Horizontal/Vertical set to 5 with Opacity to 100 and Blur at 20 and then click OK
Ok now you added a nice dark shadow! Now lets merge our layers together into one LAYER to do this go to your menu go to LAYERS to MERGE to MERGE VISIBLE and this will make our project all one layer! Now lets remove those marching ants also so please go to SELECTIONS and click on SELECT NONE now are marching ants are gone!! We are now ready to add our frame to our picture. We are going to add another border just like we did earlier, so to do this go to your menu and click on IMAGE and ADD BORDER. Using the same settings we had before of the bright yellow and the number 20 just click OK. And now you should see another bright yellow border around our picture frame. Now take your MAGIC WAND and click on the inside of the yellow to make our new border activated with marching ants around it. Now I want you to open your file you downloaded and open your wood grain and place it inside your paint shop pro as we will be working with that now.
We are now going to Flood Fill the Yellow area with our Wood Grain Pattern to do this we will use our Flood Fill Tool and if you are not sure how to use this tool please click here for our Flood Fill Tutorial. Ok in our materials palette please click on the FOREGROUND box or the first color box and it will open up your materials palette as shown below. You will notice three tabs at the top. They are Color, Gradient and Pattern, for this tutorial we want to click on Pattern. Now in the Current Pattern please click on that box and find our Wood Grain Pattern and click on it and then click OK.
Now using your flood fill tool please fill in our yellow area with the wood grain pattern. Now this is what your photo should look like

Ok we are almost finished now let’s add a bevel edge to make this look like a real picture frame with dimensions. To do this go to menu and then EFFECTS to 3D Effects to OUTER BEVEL. Use the settings shown in the diagram below they are Width 8, Smoothness 14, Depth 50, Ambience 0, Shininess 0, Angle 315, Intensity 50, Elevation 30 then click ok

Congradulations you are FINSIHED!! Now you can save this as GIF or JPEG format !!
