Tutorial: Making a Prim Crow Lineart

Please make sure you have time to complete this tutorial will also post a tutorial on how to fill and color this next so be sure to watch for that.

Let’s start with going to FILE and then NEW and we want to make our image 900 x 900 pixels once you have added the numbers click OK and you should have a transparent 900 x 900 image on your desktop.

Ok now I want you to click on your shapes tools and we want to make the crows head so we want to use the circle shape as shown below:

Now in our materials section we want our foreground to be black in color and our background to be closed see example below:

Ok now using your circle shape you want to draw a circle for the head. Now keep in mind when drawing the head not to make it to big as we still need to add the feathers on top of the head and the body and the legs. So draw your first circle this is for our head .

Now at this point you may see your circle is highlighted to remove this RIGHT CLICK and a pop up box will show up click APPLY this will allow you to move onto to draw something else:

Ok now go to your menu and click on LAYERS to NEW RASTER LAYER and when the pop up box comes up click ok this is giving us a second layer and we will use this layer for our body. For our body we are going to still use our circle shape tool and we are going to make a second circle for the body see my example below:

Ok now that we have our second circle drawed we want to move our circle of our body so that it lines up under our head good so you want to use your Move tool By Clicking on our Mool tool this will allow you to move that circle wherever you want it. Now when you have your circle right where you want it we are going to use our eraser tool to erase some of our body that we no longer need. Please see my example below I have circled in red the area we will be erasing:

Now using your eraser tool ONLY erase the area I have shown you above, so that when you are done your example will look like mine below:

Ok now we are going to work on adding our feathers to the top of our crow! To do this we are going to use our pen tool and we want to use the following settings on our pen you will see when you click on the pen you can either draw in straight lines or freehand we want to use freehand so please set your pen settings like shown below:

Now we want to draw our first feather. Now a few tips before you get started. First if you make it and don’t like it DONT FRET! Simply go to your menu and click on EDIT and then UNDO and this will undo what you did. A great feature of Paint Shop Pro. Second if you draw your feathers you will see little nodes around the lines you drew those nodes if you take your mouse and and click on ONE node it will allow you to adjust the shape of your feather. So your drawing is never complete until you are happy with the shape of it and this takes time to get used too. So take your time.

Now after you draw your first feather you will see your line is still highlighted if you like the shape and you want to go on and make your second feather please right click with your mouse and you will see a pop up box show up click on APPLY. You can draw as many feathers as you want sometimes I use three and sometimes I use four so use your own judgement.  This will remove the highlight on your first feather and allow you to go on and draw your second and third feather. REMEBER After each feather to right click and hit apply so you can go on!

Now that we have our feathers drawn lets go and MERGE this so that we only have one layer! To do this go to your menu and click on LAYERS to MERGE to MERGE VISIBLE now this took our graphic to ONE layer! Now lets add a second layer for our wings. to do this go to LAYERS and then NEW RASTER LAYERS and you can name this WINGS.

Again we are going to use our pen tool to draw our wings using the same settings as we had before. Now you will draw two circles for our wings see my example below and remember after each half circle you draw right click and hit APPLY to move onto to the next half circle:

Now that we have our left wing drawn we will want to merge this so in your layers palette you see your wing layer I want you to right click on that and click duplicate this is making an exact duplicate of our wing. Once you have duplicated our wing go to IMAGE to MIRROR and this will move our mirror to the right. Now click on your MOVE TOOL to move into place.

Now your crow should look like mine below:

Starting to look like a crow now!! Now go to LAYERS and click MERGE and MERGE VISIBLE. Now we are back to one layer! And we are now ready to move on and make our legs! Now using our Pen tool again this time instead of freehand we want to draw straight lines so please click on the straight line like below:

Now we want to draw two straight lines to represent our legs of the crow.

Now still using our pen tool we want to go back and click on Freehand because we want to draw the bottom of our feet. So draw the bottom of the feet as shown below:

Ok now that we our leg drawn will need to make a duplicate copy like we did for the wings. So in your layers section click on the layer our leg is on and right click with your mouse and hit duplicate. Then go to IMAGES and click mirror. Then using your move tool move the leg into place. Once you are done with that we want to merge our layers again so go to LAYERS to MERGE to MERGE VISIBLE and we are again back to one layer.  Now we want to add another layer for our eyes. So go to LAYERS to NEW RASTER LAYER and click ok.

For our eyes we are going to use our shape tool again in circle like we did for the head and body. But this time we are going to put our Foreground to black  and background to the color of black as shown below:

Now using your circle tool make an oval shape for our eye as shown below:

Now we want to change our background color to black, so that both our foreground and background are now black. And we want to make a new layer for our pupil so go to LAYERS to NEW RASTER LAYER and click Ok. Now we want to draw a smaller oval for our pupil as shown below:

Ok now that we have our eye drawn we want to go to our layers palette. On the bottom layer which is our body we want to close that off for right now so where you see the eyeball picture next to our bottom layer click on that and you should now see a RED X and will make our body disappear so that only our eyes are showing as below:

Now we want to make this eye ONE layer! To do this go to LAYERS to MERGE to MERGE VISIBLE. Now you will see two layers in our layers palette one is our body which is deactivated and then our eyes. On the eyes layer right click and hit duplicate and then go to IMAGES and click mirror. Using your move tool move the eye to where you want it. Now lets click on the red X next to our body layer and make it active again and go to LAYERS to MERGE to MERGE VISIBLE and once again we should have one layer.

Now we need to work on our beak so lets add another layer.  Go to LAYERS to NEW RASTER LAYER and then ok.

Using our pen tool in the freehand let’s draw out our beak as shown below:

Now I right click in the layers palette on our beak and I hit duplicate and then I go to Images and click Mirror so that we don’t have to draw the second part of our beak. Use your move tool to move this into place.

Now lets go to our LAYERS to MERGE LAYERS to MERGE VISIBLE to make our project into one layer! Now all we had to do is make our nostrils! So click on your circle shape tool and then go to Layers to NEW RASTER LAYER. and add a new layer. Now using our circle shape make a nostril shape like shown below:

Now we want to go to our layers palette and right click on our nostril and hit duplicate and then go to Images to mirror and now we have two nostrils! Congradulations you have made a line art crow! Now to save go to FILE to SAVE AS and save this as a PNG format to keep it transparent!

Send us your examples you made so we can showcase your work! Send to AngelaWenke@aol.com don’t forget to watch for our tutorial on coloring in our crow!
