Tutorial: Creating a Seamless Tiled Background

Materials You will Need:

This file contains a snowflake and a background tile you will use in this tutorial please click here to download

After you download these files you should find inside a snowflake and blue background. These are the materials we will be using to create a seamless tiled background. This is very easy and you can use this same procedure to create all kinds of seamless tiled backgrounds.

First thing we need to do is resize our snowflake as it is a little big too big. So in your menu bar please go to IMAGES to RESIZE and use the settings shown below which are width set to 60 and height set to 60 so we are reducing the size of the snowflake to 60% of the original. Now please click on the OK button.

Open your blue background and now click on the snowflake to make it active and then go to your menu bar and click on EDIT and then COPY. Now click on your blue background and go to EDIT and PASTE AS NEW LAYER and paste the snowflake into the middle of your blue background as shown below: (In your layers palette you should see two layers now one is the layer 1 which is your blue background and second layer 2 is your snowflake)

Ok now that we have our snowflake added to our background and on its own seperate layer we are ready to add our seamless tiled effect. But first let’s add a nice dropshadow effect to our snowflake. Please go to your menu and click on IMAGES to 3D EFFECTS to DROPSHADOW and use the settings shown below which are  Vertical set to 1 and Horizontal set to 1 Opacity is at 100 and Blur is at 2.00. Now click on the color box as we want to add a dark grey as black would be too dark. Now when you click on the color box you should have another box pop up that is your colors or materials palette. Please go to the bottom of this where it says HTML and in the box next to it put in #404040 this is the dark grey color we will use. Once done click OK.

Now that we have a nice shadowing effect we are ready for our seamless tiled effect. In your menu please go to EFFECTS to IMAGE EFFECTS to SEAMLESS TILED and click on that.

When the box pops up you want to use these settings please, Horizontal effect is set to 0, Vertical offset is set to 0, Transition is set to 50, Tiling Method is set to corner, Direction is set to Bidirectional, and Corner Style is set to Linear. Now click OK

Now you just make your first seamless tiled background!! See my example below! Now you can go to your menu and click on FILE to SAVE AS and save this as either GIF or JPEG format and you are done!!!
